This time for Africa!

Our fourteen hour flight from London to Cape Town was actually relatively painless because I was so tired and basically slept the entire time. I was really impressed with the South African Airways service. We had an awesome flight attendant with the absolute best attitude and sense of humor. Julie and I had some awesome pizza in the London airport and weren’t hungry for the dinner they served us when we got on the plane, and he was genuinely concerned that we weren’t eating! However, there was some crazy turbulence that scared the pants off of me for a good part of the flight though.

We had a six hour layover in Cape Town and we even landed early, so we figured that we should go into town and check it out for a few hours. A very friendly driver named Bartholomew offered to take us to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront in Cape Town and pick us up, so we just got some lunch, browsed the shops (and found some really cool postcards that will look really cool on the walls of my dorm room this Fall!), rode a small-ish ferris wheel to get a general view of the area, and checked out the beach.

Cape Town is a really cute city that actually weirdly reminded me a little bit of Annapolis with all of the boats and small shops nearby. It is also the second most populous city in South Africa and the location of the first heart transplant! On our way back to the airport, we also passed the Cape Town Stadium, the location of the 2010 World Cup. It was unfortunate that we weren’t able to stay for longer to hike or do other things while we were there and I don’t know how likely it will be that we will be able to return because it is about a 20 hour drive from Windhoek to Cape Town. Regardless, it was nice to be able to spend even a few hours there.
